Our Vision StatementSouthern Conservation Partners was established in late 2014 as a not-for-profit corporation for purposes of filling needs and gaps in efforts to protect, restore, and build public awareness and appreciation for the extraordinary natural heritage assets in the southern U.S. region. The need for this organization was perceived by its founders who were completing long professional careers in land and environmental conservation and who constituted the organization’s initial board of directors. Most of the nation’s imperiled natural ecosystems are located in the southern U.S. Natural areas, native biota and wildlife, and the natural beauty of the region’s landscapes contribute immensely to its economy, environmental quality, and health. Rapid commercial and residential development across the region is dramatically reducing forests, wetlands, and other natural habitats that contribute to our region's environmental health, quality of life, and biodiversity.
While substantial progress has been made in land and water resource conservation in the southern U.S. over the past fifty years, the pace of conservation has substantially declined with economic uncertainty, pressure on government budgets, cutbacks to conservation funding for public agencies, and reduced tax credits for private land conservation. Rapid growth of human population and development combined with economic and climate change effects are jeopardizing the South’s environmental assets and natural heritage. Threats to the region’s natural heritage are increasing, while governmental investment in its protection has diminished. It is clearly necessary to search for and implement more innovative, creative approaches to conserve and protect our region’s natural environment – demanding greater attention to building partnerships. We are committed to applying our collective wisdom and experience to aid the “next generation” of conservation leaders and the public in meeting challenges to protect, restore, and honor the wonderful and critically important natural resources and heritage assets of the southern U.S. region. We promote innovative collaborations designed to conserve and care for the region’s natural and cultural heritage and ecological health. We believe in the power of partnerships, creativity, and storytelling to respect and care for the South's natural heritage. |
